Events & Updates!

It’s been a busy summer! After spinning Sky High with DJ Center, I moved on to our 2nd installment of Makossa BK. The rain did not dampen anyone’s spirit! We packed the spot and folks danced in the rain! It was an amazing day! Check the photos!

After that, we celebrated Fresthetic’s 5 year Anniversary!  Beats inside the store provided by yours truly, and burgers outside! I had a blast!

Some other things are in the works (including a NEW MIX!) but I’m back at BK Terrace this weekend while DJ Center is in LA, and Makossa’s final installment is Labor Day Weekend! Stay tuned for details on that. In the meanwhile, check the flyer for this weekend and be sure to RSVP!

Event-SkyHigh @ BK Terrace this Saturday!

It was great rocking last month’s Makossa BK with DJ Center! He and I go way back!

When I started DJing publicly back in 2005, he’d always extend a guest spot to me at his residency at Belmont Lounge. There’s always been great synergy with him even though we have different styles. It all culminates into a floor full of folks dancing and great tunes which is pinnacle.

Center’s been rocking therooftop of ALoft Hotel in downtown Brooklyn on Saturday nights with DJ Undres for several months now. Center extended an invitation to me to share the decks with him while Undres is out of town and I would be a fool not to accept! Music, rooftop views, summer in Brooklyn. I can’t think of a better way to spend one’s Saturday night.

Please RSVP (email below) for FREE entry & easier access (less of a wait if there’s a line). No dress code but it’s Saturday. You’re on a sexy rooftop. Be your fly selves :) .

SkyHigh @ BK Terrace (Aloft Hotel)
222 Duffield Street (Willoughby Street)
9pm-2am (the earlier the better! I’ll be on around 11)
A/C/F/R to Jay Street/Metrotech
2/3 to Hoyt Street
B/R/Q to Dekalb Ave
RSVP: rsvp@pushthefader.com

Makossa BK 2012 Recap!

Yes, it was hot. Literally.

Yes, it was HOT. Figuratively.

9+ hours of just non-stop beats, heat, and beautiful people from all walks of life; all cities, states, and countries joined together to enjoy each other and enjoy a hot summer day in one of the best cities in the world. Add the synergy of 4 DJs with distinct styles but a love of good music and you have the makings for an amazing day.

Check out the slideshow from photographer John DeMato and check back here or join the mailing list so you don’t miss the next one.

Event-The Return of Makossa BK!

The heat is on! Kinda thought we’d have another mild one, eh? Doesn’t appear to be the case!

Hate to break it to you but the heat will be turned up further this weekend with the return of Makossa in Brooklyn!

Not only are we back, we are moving! We’ve outgrown our lovely little yard in Williamsburg. We found a much larger space which will allow us to rock rain or shine, with a beer selection that will have you crying tears of joy! (non-beer drinkers, we got you too! don’t worry!). There is also a full kitchen and grill ready to go!

If you’ve been to Makossa, you know the deal: beats that span genres, times, and continents join forces with good food and the beautiful people that make up New York City. Folks from all walks of life, all boroughs (and states and countries). A great time all around with always a surprise or two thrown in.

The summer’s first installment of Makossa BK has one of my all time favorite DJs, DJ Center. I’ve said this countless times. Center is just amazing. He’ll have you jamming to Hip Hop just as easily as he will get you grooving to some Tropicalia (which is oh-so appropriate for the summer!). I haven’t spun with him in years and I’m so very excited to be reunited with him and the rest of the Makossa BK Fam- DJ Wonway Posibul, DJ Shinobi Shaw, and our partners Fresthetic, Latin Soul Brothers, and Rare Form!

Mark your calendars and see you there!

Parlour’s Anniversary Jam!

Bonsoir! Taking a short break from my last night in Paris. This trip is amazing! I hope you’re checking out some tidbits on tumblr. A full recap is coming when I return!

In the meanwhile, the pics from Parlour Magazine’s 4th Anniversary Party are out! Great times with the ladies of Parlour, the men & women who enjoy the mag, and plenty of Bushmills Whiskey. It’s good to see someone recognizing that beautiful intelligent women and whiskey are quite fond of one another :)

Check out the full photoset here!

Bon Voyage!

Today, I’m on a plane to Paris. I don’t speak a lick of French. I’m just bringing a laptop full of tunes, my needles & headphones, and an addiction to foods with lots of butter in them.

As soon as I land, I’m doing an opening set for the Masta Ace/Stricklin/MarcoPolo/Wordsworth show at Glazart!

Then, on Thursday, May 17th, I’m spinning a set at the Panic Room.

Other days, you can catch me tripping over cobblestones and snapping photos I plan to post daily to my new Tumblr (internet access pending) .

If you have any people out in Paris, definitely tell them to stop through and check out the sets!

Events Galore!

Whew! What a month!

Again, I’ve been M.I.A. on the blog, but I’ve definitely been working. After throwing down on some private gigs (including one at Norwood), I started working on a new mix which I hope to get out soon!

I’ve also been working on locking down some gigs! This weekend, another fête privé, but on Tuesday, April 24th, I’m spinning for a live taping of Know This! TV.

Know This! is a web-series created and hosted by Ariana Proehl, who, after realizing there are so few intelligent, cool, fun, and socially aware media sources, decided to take it upon herself and create a talk show to present different points of view and to get people thinking about changing themselves, and the world!

Next week, she is presenting a LIVE version of her show in front of a studio audience, and you! Her guests will include model and actress Yaya DaCosta, comedienne and blogger Franchesca Ramsey, as well as journalist and co-founder of my favorite online mag, Parlour Magazine, Hillary Crosley!

And once again, I’m being reunited on the decks with Jasmine Solano! There will also be a performance by Grammy-nominated producer-singer-songwriter, Live at the Loft alum, Musinah!

As if it couldn’t get any better, the event is also a fundraiser, where a portion of proceeds will benefit youth organization The Brotherhood/Sister Sol!

Purchase a ticket!

I promise not to stray too far. I have to update you guys on some other upcoming gigs, including some in PARIS (France, not Texas)  in mid-May! I’m too excited!

It’s Been a Long Time!

I’m very sorry for the inactivity! It may look like I’ve been partying and slacking but I’ve been working quite hard! If you’ve known me for a while, you know the first few months of the year are pretty hectic for me since my friends and I got together six years ago and decided to throw a little party known as Donuts are Forever.*

Our annual fundraiser and tribute keeps growing every year and this year, it had quite a spurt! We had over 1100 attendees that came through Brooklyn Bowl’s doors and raised over $10,000! Check out our Facebook page and follow us on twitter to find out how this money is going to good use!

I’ve been on the bill for the past few years of DAF (as we so affectionately call it) but I decided to take a back seat this year since the DJ lineup was so sick! It didn’t stop me from getting a set in when we opened the doors before the party started to warm up the crowd and to calm myself down!

I don’t think I can stay away from the turntables for next year’s DAF but I must say, not having to focus on a set during the party helped my fundraising skills tremendously!

There are tons of photos of our event online! If you were there, see if one of our photogs captured you! If you couldn’t make it, check out how much fun was had and promise you won’t miss next year’s! Thanks to Liz Allen (who snapped that top photo of me and my boys!), Joann Gomez (who snapped the photo above) , N. Corren Conway, as well as bkbooth for documenting the festivities!

Now that DAF is done, it’s back on the decks I go! There are some events on the horizon that I shall let you guys know about very soon! However, if you really want to stay in the loop, it’s best if you just type your email address to the right over there and join my mailing list, or check me out on Facebook or twitter so you don’t miss a second!

*I would be absolutely remiss if I did not mention that a dear friend is missing from this picture. Kristy is our fourth crew member and could not make it up for this year’s event but she continues to hold down the planning and press for DAF every year! We love you!

Happy New Year!!!

This past year has been one of great strides! So very honored that people have allowed me the opportunity to just get on and share my love of music. Like Teddy Pendergrass,
the more I get, the more I want
, so I’m looking to spin more in the New Year!

I started that resolution off on the right note at SoCo’s First Annual New Year’s Eve Ball! They definitely went all out to set the bar high for NYE in their amazing space. Frei from
The Ahficionados
had the spot moving EARLY. When the clock struck 12, I played Bill Wither’s “Lovely Day” . I had to  drop a classic- it’s the first song of the New Year! Don’t worry- after that it was party time!

Check out the photos!  Nothing feels better than seeing pictures of folks dancing knowing you made it happen (blind even! I couldn’t see the dancefloor!)

Thanks to everyone who allowed me to collaborate with them in 2011- I hope for more of the same in 2012!  Let’s get it!

Live at the Loft Video!

If you’ve been so lucky, you’ve had the pleasure of taking the PATH train into New Jersey and uncovered what is easily one of the best live music venues in the tri-state. And it’s in someone’s house.

Photo/Videographer and director Tone has transformed his living room into a soundstage, where he gives a group of music fans and lovers to check out some great music by artists that are definitely on the cutting edge across all genres. It’s called Live at the Loft.

I’ve had the pleasure and privelege of being both an attendee and a participant-DJing before and after the main performers bless us with their gifts. After Tone and his team get through producing & capturing the sounds and sights for the show, they create videos that somehow manage to catch it all-the vibe of the audience, the details in the music creation. Good feelings all around. It’s rare that I catch a recap of a performance I’ve attended live and feel the same way I did when I was there. Tone & his team have a great gift.

Here’s video from one of my favorite Live at the Loft performances-Saturn Never Sleeps. The group consists of veteran DJ/producer King Britt and Producer/Singer Rucyl. These guys literally compose on stage and they create a soundscape that is simply beautiful to hear and compels one to move!

As if that wasn’t enough, the night also had a performance by The Stuyvesants. These guys have dropped three (!) albums full of beats that keep heads nodding continuously. They warmed up the crowd so lovely! I also got to share the decks with Jasmine Solano again which is always a treat.

I also took it as a huge honor that King Britt enjoyed my set. This dude has had me dancing until I was drenched in sweat and was definitely one of the many DJs that have inspired me, so to hear that my set was “sick” seriously made my year. It’s something to tell the grandkids one day :) .

Without further ado, here’s Live At The Loft: Episode #19. Peep my cameo early on.

Saturn Never Sleeps “Hearts On Fire” from LIVE AT THE LOFT on Vimeo.

Definitely check out the rest of the LATL website for other performances, and if you poke around enough, you may find out how to snag yourself an invitation to the next one.

Also, download Saturn Never Sleeps’ Yesterday’s Machine and The Stuyvesants two volume set The Finer Things.
